Chiangmai Trip - Day 2, Part 2 [Wat Phra That Doi Suthep]

Wednesday, December 18, 2013

Sawadeekup! Sorry for the 'mia' period, so now let's continue on the 2nd day of my trip to Chiangmai. We were heading over to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in the late afternoon. You may want to know more about Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.

"Once inside the temple grounds; visitors must take off their shoes. Visitors must be appropriately dressed. The original copper plated chedi is the most holy area of the temple grounds. Within the site are pagodas, statues, bells and shrines. Aspects of the Wat draw from both Buddhism and Hinduism. There is a model of the Emerald Buddha and a statue of the Hindu God Ganesh. Views of Chiang Mai can be seen on the other side of the temple."

As you can seen from the photo below, you may get up to the temple by 309 steps free or you can choose to take a tram up to paying 30 Baht per way or 50 Baht for two way and it is free for Thai nationals.

Both side of the stairs have Dragons.

Do and Don't in the temple (Tram Tickets)
The tram route up to the temple.
The kids here are so cute, and they are going to have some street performance.
Their performance accompanied by some adults, the red 'bowl' infront was for some collection of money.
So let's start by walking the exterior area of the temple.. Stretch of bells whereby you can make a wish and then go ahead to ring it.

This is the spot whereby you can see a side of Chiangmai.

How the temple place looks like.

Dipping a coin at a time, in a way making wishes and doing good deed.

Now that we are into the interior area of the temple, you will be asked to take off your shoes. This is how the holy shrine looks like, shining gold right!
From different angles.... no filters used for taking photos at all.

Making donations by 'kiaping' your notes between sticks.
We tried this, whereby the head monk I suppose, sprinkle water on our heads to bless us.

Cute right ?!?! ^^
Additional points to take note:

Getting there: You can get a songthaew (a small pickup truck with seats along the sides of the covered bed) from the small market area at the corner of Manneenopparat and Chotana Roads, just outside the Changpuak Gate. A round trip, including a visit to the Doi Pui Maeo village, runs around 150 Baht.

Operating Hours: 5.30am to 7.30pm
